To Boldly Go Where No Nan Has Gone Before (Blog)

Last year I went to a Star Trek convention in London. Destination Star Trek London 2012 to be exact. A geek-fest if ever there was one. Although to fully enjoy the weekend it was necessary to be a geek with an above average salary. I must have missed that requirement in the small print of the entrance ticket I purchased. Said ticket, it seemed, allowed the bearer to merely cross the threshold of the convention. The only other pleasure attached to being a proud ticket holder was the opportunity to wonder aimlessly amongst a throng of costumed Trekkies. I wasn’t convinced that most of them weren’t simply wearing their normal daily attire. They all seemed a little too comfortable in their Star Fleet/Klingon/Borg uniforms.

One of the extras I paid for was for my son to have his photograph taken with Patrick Stewart. He plays Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and is a heart-throb for many female Trekkies. And my mother. As soon as the photograph was taken my son took a picture of it on his mobile and sent it to his Nanna, knowing it would make her day.

Soon after it was my mum’s birthday and we all trooped round to see her after I’d finished work that day. When the birthday wishes were out of the way, my mum announced she had made the Patrick Stewart photograph the background on her mobile.

My son was thrilled.

Until he saw what she’d done.
