A Cautionary Tale (Poem)

I need not to be told of the danger
Of accepting a lift from a stranger
And it goes without saying after dark
That I’d never walk alone through the park
That is why it’s so hard to comprehend
The way I am about to meet my hand
For the man with his hands around my neck
Did pass each and every single check

I met him tonight in the local pub
We stayed for a few then went to a club
I was reluctant at first, but he knew my mate
It was her who had arranged for the blind date
He was handsome, charming and generous too
Opened doors, bought the drinks and give him his due
Nothing was too much trouble, he did as I asked
So I found myself hoping the date wasn’t our last

We called it a night shortly after half past two
He walked me home, said there was a shortcut he knew
But soon, under moonlight, as my heart skipped a beat
Something suddenly changed and his true self I did meet
And now as my life flashes right in front of my eyes
Being alone wasn’t so bad I now realise
I should have been happy with the life that I led
Because anything is better than winding up dead
